To The Top Of The World By Steam   To The Top Of The World By Steam

TO THE TOP OF THE WORLD BY STEAM
THE DARJEELING - HIMALAYAN RAILWAY

The Darjeeling - Himalayan is totally charming, and once out of the frenetic lower portion, so are the people, especially the children. We start our journey at Siliguri, not quite the start of the railway, but the site of the engine shed, and an Indian Rail station, so there are 3 gauges, broad gauge, meter gauge and the two foot Darjeeling. During the journey, the railway crosses Hill Cart Road 177 times, and rises 6874 feet to the summit at Ghum. Kanchenjunga, the second or third highest mountain in the world (depends on who's figures you use) at over 28,000 feet was visible from near Darjeeling, it's mostly not! You'll take a ride on the train, and see some of the scenery and the people as well as seeing the trains in action. The D-H is now a UNESCO world heritage site, and a truly outstanding, delightful little railway. And for a bonus, you'll see the sugar mill at Riga in Bihar province, it's 0-8-0T, an odd critter, ox carts and kids!

Steam To Janakpurdham

STEAM TO JANAKPURDHAM

Tipong Coal Mine is located in Northeast India, on the border with Burma, and for the moment runs the oldest steam locomotive in regular service in the world, and a Darjeeling B class.Living on borrowed time, this 2 foot gauge railway takes coal from the mine through the jungle to a truck loading facility. Far from tourist destinations, this seldom visited little line is full of charm and character! As soon as they have the money, two bridges will be rebuilt, the coal will move by truck and this delightful little railway will die. The Janakpur Railway runs from Jaynagar, India to Janakpurdham, Nepal. This 2' 6" gauge line has now dieselized, but we rode and taped a chartered steam train, with an 0-6-2 Hunswell Clarke side tank, built in 1930. We were only allowed to stay in Nepal for one night because of terrorists! The festival of Rama Sita was going on in Janakpurdham during our visit, and there were thousands of people on the station waiting for the diesel train, many of them rode on the roof and sides, and on flat cars on our chartered train. Runby's, the ride from the train (and the roof) and a look at the people. An entertaining look at a charming little railway!

There are a number of SD70M's on the property, all with the new style nose, some in primer and some in black, and some in the rapidly disapearing "racoon" or "bandit" scheme. A number of meets, including 2 three train meets. Loads of action.

FOSTORIA - IRON TRIANGLE

Fostoria, Ohio is the point that CSX's North-South ex C&O main line crosses the East-West ex B&O main line at grade, with Norfolk Southern crossing both on the ex Nickle Plate. The area formed by these 3 diamonds is known locally as the iron triangle. Up to 140 trains a day pound the diamonds. We spent two days there from dawn to dusk to bring you lots of action. BNSF & UP and lots of lease units, as well as NS & CSX make appearances. Continuous action.

FLAGS, FLARES & WINGS - UNION PACIFIC'S SD70M'S ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST

UP's newest power working hard across the Southwest in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Scenic highlights include Steins Mountain, the Dragoon Mountain, the Maricopa Mountains, the Salton Sea and San Timeteo Canyon on Beaumont Hill. I've always liked SD70M's, but with the flaired radiators and the "Building America" flag paint, I think they are really handsome engines. See and hear them flying across the desert and lugging up grades.

BNSFs Trinchera Pass

BNSF'S TRINCHERA PASS

Trinchera Pass is on BNSF's Twin Peaks sub, and runs between Trinidad, Colorado and Texline, Texas, crossing New Mexico. The line is due to start directional running in July, so we paid a visit before it happens. The line mostly hosts coal trains, with a few manifests for variety. The tracks climb and curve along the side of the mountains before heading along the plateau to Texas. A scenic piece of railroad, I even caught a train in an afternoon thunderstorm, lots of lightning!

WINTER ON MARIAS PASS

Continuing our very popular winter theme, we visited Marias Pass in January, 2002. Heavy snow and 70 m.p.h. winds marked our visit, and BNSF celebrated by dumping a westbound intermodal off the bridge at East Glacier on the Saturday night. We taped some of the cleanup work on Sunday morning, and caught the first train to pass the wreck. Lots of dash 9's in both Heritage schemes, and a number of warbonnets, plus SD40-2's, including some still wearing Cascade Green. Taped between Blackfoot and West Glacier, all the favorite locations including Two Medicine Bridge, Spotted Robe, Bison, False Summit, Marias, Java, and Essex, and the weather goes from sunshine to heavy snow.

MK5000's OVER SOLDIER SUMMIT

As Monty Python used to put it "and now for something completely different". The Utah Railway has the only 6 MK5000's built, and they ply their trade dragging coal trains over Soldier Summit. They sound very different with their big Caterpillar prime movers, and they look splendid in the Utah's red and gray paint. We visited Soldier Summit in January, 2002, and were granted permission to visit the loader, the unit's cab, and Martin Shops. See and hear these unique units in action!

HIGHBALL OVER CAJON

Another tape on Cajon? Yes indeed. I'd never been and the railroads involved have merged. Because of El Nino everything was green, I had bright blue skies (no smog!) and there was snow on the mountains. Combined with hard working trains and power in a rainbow of paint schemes, models from GP9's through SD751's and C44-9W's pIus leased units, LOTS of SD45's (would you believe 7 in one lash-up?) and GP60M's, all working hard or whining downgrade, what more could you ask for? Lots of action at Blue Cut, Sullivan's Curve, Mormon Rocks, Alray, Terrace Cut, Summit and Frost. Check our the mergers and the scenic splendors of Cajon Pass, you'll be glad you did, this one is GOOD!

Winter on Tennessee Pass

WINTER ON TENNESSEE PASS

Well it's gone. This really was the last winter for Tennessee Pass and what a pity it had to close. Taped in January 1997 with lots of snow and sunshine and superb scenery. This is one of the best tapes I've done, and getting on for being my best seller, it got good reviews in both "Trains" and "Railfan" magazines. Excellent trip, I only got dragged out of one ditch and had to be towed out of Pando by a wrecker. Seriously though, the scenery is just magnificent, the trains are working hard, and the sight and sound of 4 head end AC's, 4 AC swing helpers and 2 AC's on the rear of a mammoth coal train grinding through the double S-curves at Mitchell is an unforgettable experience.

MAGNIFICENT MONTANA

Winter on the MRL

WINTER ON THE MRL

Montana Rail Link in February, 1997. We worked our way from Huntley over Bozeman Hill, Winston Hill and Mullan Pass, along the Clark Fork with its semaphores to the famous causeway near Sand Point. We had lots of snow, blowing around in the sunshine on Bozeman, sunshine and heavy snow on Mullan, and got out to the old Milwaukee Trestle at Lombard (what a drive on snow covered dirt roads that was). We caught just about all the power MRL has to offer including F45's, GP9's and a caboose, BN power including the new C44's in Heritage paint, and even an 11 unit lashup in heavy snow. Awesome railroad with older power in the depths of winter.

Marias Pass

MARIAS PASS

Fall 97 on magnificent Marias Pass, BNSF's mainline through the Rockies. I had some perfect weather and caught lots of the new Heritage C44's, which look terrific against the mountains and fall foliage I started at Shelby and worked through Cut Bank, Browning, Grizzly, Two Medicine Bridge, the snowsheds, Summit, Marias, Java, Essex and on down to Whitefish. I even spent a night at the Izaac Walton to complete the railfan experience of a lifetime. Beautiful fall weather and foliage, stunning mountain scenery, varied and hard working motive power make this an exceptional tape.

BC Rail

BC RAIL

This trip was the fulfillment of a long time personal ambition. We started at the yard at North Vancouver with a rebuilt RS18 and worked our way along the main line to Prince George. We got a brief look at the Royal Hudson along Howe Sound, then concentrated on the freights which are mostly led by the C40-8CM cowls, which we thought were handsome units. The scenery was just magnificent, especially the Fraser Canyon north of Lillooet, making for some stunning views of the trains clinging to the mountainside. We were thrilled to find a pair of C-420's switching at Prince George, and couldn't resist a quick trip to Tacheeda to catch CN handing a coal train over to the electrics This is a fascinating and unique railroad, you'll Iike it as much as we did.

Beyond Hope

BEYOND HOPE Along the Thompson and Fraser

I'd wanted to shoot the Thompson & Fraser Rivers once I saw the CTC Board article in the August 1988 issue, it took nine years but it was worth the wait. Stunning scenery, two railroads with interesting power and lots of action make for a great railfan experience, and we had an excellent time charging up and down in hot pursuit, or finding a good spot and just sitting. We had never really seen CN's big cowls or new SD75's, and Chris had never seen CP's "Red Barns" so we saw lots of new stuff. We caught "The Rocky Mountaineer" and the "American Orient Express," which were pretty neat and several times caught trains on both sides of the river. We covered the line from Hope BC (hence the title) to Kamloops through the magnificent Fraser and Thompson Rivet Canyons.

We covered CP's transcontinental mainline between Golden BC and Banff AB through the Kicking Horse Valley, the Spiral Tunnels, over Kicking Horse Pass and down to Banff. Power is mostly SD40-2's with some SD40-2F's (red barns) and some leased power. The Rockies are absolutely magnificent and are right in your face, and Morant's Curve has to be one of the most spectacular locations on the continent. East Broad Top

EAST BROAD TOP FALL SPECTACULAR 1996

What an absolutely fabulous place the EBT is. One of the things I enjoyed most was being able to wander around the shop complex and just soak up the atmosphere and imagine how it must have been in its heyday. Largely unspoiled and unchanged in decades, with four narrow gauge Mikes in steam over the Fall Spectacular weekend, it was a real treat to see and experience. We chased the northbound job out of Brattleboro in December and January, the latter being somewhat frigid at 20 below, but it made for some excellent photographic conditions. SUPERFLEET & SAGEBRUSH (BNSF ON THE SELIGMAN SUB)

Warbonnets still rule on the Seligman Sub. Sure, the mergers shows, but there are still lots of units wearing one of the best looking paint schemes ever. The new 700 series GE's are out in force, looking superb in the beautiful winter sunshine. There is some new "Heritage" paint around, and not only on C44's! There are some solid sets of Cascade Green, but not a lot of blue and yellow. This is impressive, heavy duty main line railroading at its best, with howling, high speed double stacks, and roaring manifests dragging up-grade. We cover the line from Needles, CA to Winslow, AZ, including the big bridge at Topock, the Sacramento Wash, Kingman Canyon, Crozier Canyon, Seligman, the Crookton line relocation, Williams Junction, Supai Summit, Maine, Darling, Canyon Diablo, Sunshine and lots more.

Lynchburg's Trestles

THE POKEY- Norfolk Southern's Pocohontas Division

Taped in the spring of 1997 when the new widecab GE's were out and about in force, both on the point and as helpers. This is coal country, and we caught lots of heavy coal drags twisting through the narrow valleys and bIasting up the grades and through the tunnels that make up this highly scenic route. NS still uses cabooses for back up moves on the mine runs, I was surprised to find them backing up for 15 or 20 miles. Imagine a new C40-9W on one end and a caboose on the other. Also caught a coal train at War Eagle being run around by half a dozen trains. A great show and another of my favorites.

This was a spur of the moment trip before Chris went off to RIT in the Fall of '95. KCS's units are mostly clean, we thought the gray, red and yellow paint scheme looked pretty good. We got some NS power, including a GE with at least a 6-foot flame at the stack, Delta Southern, some Mid-South geeps, the 3% grade through the enormous Kudzu patch at Vicksburg and a nice meet at Munroe. We got in to Cable, Bealville, Tunnels 1 & 2, hiked into tunnel 5, got old power, new power, sunset shots, dawn shots and all in all had a pretty good time. the best thing to my mind was the oil cans, now, sadly, no longer running over Tehachapi.
